Cubs future depends on the fortunes of Carlos Marmol

by: Mauricio Rubio Jr.

We all remember vintage Marmol. I remember him earning a great nickname by one of my friends in 2007. They called him White Castle, because he had a slider that was guaranteed to make you crap your pants. He was a phenom, a pitching prodigy it seemed. He was a bit wild, it seemed like he was always in a 2-0 count, but he was effectively wild.

This year his control is absolutely lost. He's not even close on most pitches, and even though he has remained unhittable, he's just not hitting the zone. Marmol never had a very good fastball, he was always a slider pitcher. Now that he can't buy a strike he doesn't have an overpowering fastball to fall back on.

That's not only a problem for Marmol, but in the larger picture, despite the feel good winning streak the Cubs are on, the Cubs are in real trouble if he can't find it. Fortunes turn on the stability of the 'pen, and while Gregg and Heilmann have found it of late, there is no way of knowing if either can remain hot through the end of the season.

Marmol needs to find his release point again, because if the Cubs make the playoffs, they will need him to be a solid 8th inning man to win in October.
